Know what the index represents

An index is a governed portfolio, not a fixed list of companies. Eligibility rules, review schedules, free-float adjustments and constituent changes affect its history and interpretation. Research should cite the relevant index methodology and avoid treating today's constituents as if they had always been present.

Match evidence to the horizon

Short-horizon models may study liquidity, volatility and market microstructure. Medium-horizon work can incorporate earnings revisions, breadth and policy transmission. Long-horizon scenarios usually depend more on profits, inflation, rates and valuation assumptions. Mixing these horizons into a single target produces a number that is difficult to explain or evaluate.

Model comparison rules

  1. Choose a target and horizon before examining the test period.
  2. Use point-in-time constituents and publication dates.
  3. Compare against historical-average and no-change baselines.
  4. Separate price return from total return where relevant.
  5. Publish errors, intervals, unstable periods and data gaps.

Scenarios are more useful than point targets

A scenario makes assumptions inspectable. An earnings path, valuation range and macroeconomic context can be varied to show what would need to be true for different outcomes. This does not assign certainty to any outcome. It lets a reader see sensitivity instead of receiving an unexplained target.

Use boundary

Index models are research tools and can fail during structural breaks. Rusaka Markets does not treat a model output as a recommendation to buy, sell or time an index. Decisions require independent verification and consideration of personal objectives and risk.
