Risk monitoring is not date prediction

Market stress emerges from interactions among liquidity, leverage, valuation, positioning, policy, economic conditions and investor behaviour. A model may estimate that observed conditions resemble earlier stress periods, but it cannot establish a certain crash date. Rare events also create a severe class-imbalance problem: a model can appear accurate by predicting no crash almost all the time.

Design the target explicitly

Before training, define the drawdown threshold, market universe, measurement window and recovery convention. Then document the indicators and their publication lags. Macroeconomic observations should use authoritative, time-stamped releases. Market indicators should distinguish current observations from later corrections. Without these controls, the system can learn information that was unavailable in real time.

Responsible outputs

  • A risk band with its historical frequency and uncertainty.
  • The conditions contributing most to the current classification.
  • False-positive and false-negative rates across rolling periods.
  • Data gaps, delayed inputs and model-drift alerts.
  • Scenario tests rather than a deterministic market call.

Evaluate the cost of errors

False alarms can cause repeated defensive action and missed participation, while missed warnings can leave risk unmanaged. The preferred threshold depends on the user's objective and constraints; it is not a universal answer. Evaluation should compare a model with simple volatility and drawdown baselines and disclose how thresholds were selected.

Use boundary

A crash-risk indicator is a decision-support input, not a prediction guarantee or personalized allocation instruction. Diversification, liquidity planning and suitability remain investor responsibilities. Rusaka Markets presents risk evidence with provenance and limitations instead of publishing certain crash calls.
