UPI Mandate for IPOs: Meaning and Failed Request Checks
Understand IPO UPI fund blocking, the ₹5 lakh payment limit versus the ₹2 lakh main-board retail category, and checks for pending or failed mandates.

What this resource does
An IPO UPI mandate is your authorisation for the sponsor bank to arrange a block on the application amount in your linked bank account and a later debit if shares are allotted. Blocking reserves the money; it is not an immediate payment to your broker. Mandate approval does not guarantee allotment.
The ₹5 lakh limit is an IPO UPI payment limit for individual applications, not a ₹5 lakh retail category. In a main-board IPO, bids up to ₹2 lakh fall within the retail individual category; an individual's bid above ₹2 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh falls within the non-institutional category. SME issues have different category rules.
Methodology
- Submit the permitted IPO application through the intermediary, using your own UPI-linked bank account. Check the recorded UPI ID, applicant and demat details, bid amount, and whether your bank, app and handle support IPO mandates.
- Open the pending-mandates section of that UPI app. Match the IPO and application details, amount and merchant information against your bid. Authorise a matching request with your UPI PIN inside the trusted app; never disclose the PIN to support staff.
- Confirm the bank's funds-block acknowledgement and retain the application reference and Unique Mandate Number (UMN), if issued. Keep application submission, mandate approval and funds blocking as separate checkpoints.
- Hypothetical arithmetic only: assume a 100-share lot and a ₹100 final issue price. A two-lot bid blocks ₹20,000. If one lot is allotted, ₹10,000 is debited and the remaining ₹10,000 is unblocked through the issue process. Actual lot sizes and prices come from the offer, not this example.
How to interpret it
A broker's submitted status records a bidding step. A pending mandate or an approval screen alone does not resolve every bank, depository or application-validation check. If statuses disagree, ask the placing intermediary to reconcile the exchange and sponsor-bank status.
After allocation, the payable amount is debited and excess blocked money is released. Non-allotment is not the same as a failed ordinary UPI transfer: establish whether your bank shows a block or an actual debit before reporting the problem.
Limitations and failure modes
- This explains IPO payment mechanics, not investment suitability or guaranteed allotment. Bank ASBA is a separate application route; the ₹5 lakh UPI rule does not make every applicant or application channel eligible.
- The ₹2 lakh retail comparison above concerns main-board issues. Check the current SME or reservation-category terms instead of copying that classification into every offer.
- No universal approval hour, retry entitlement or fund-release deadline is promised here. Read the issue's current exchange schedule, offer instructions and mandate details; seek clarification before the earliest applicable deadline.
- Sources were checked on 5 October 2026. Older official help pages may retain superseded limits or historic deadlines; the newer SEBI instruments and current issue instructions take precedence.
Research workflow
- Missing request: inspect the app's pending mandates, verify the recorded UPI ID and supported bank/handle, then contact the intermediary that placed the bid. Ask whether a resend is permitted for this issue and current status.
- Failed or declined request: record the exact error. Check available balance, UPI ID and bank/app eligibility. For a PIN or technical error, use official app/bank support and ask the placing intermediary about permitted re-initiation. Do not repeatedly guess the PIN.
- Approved but still pending elsewhere: give the intermediary the application reference, UMN and block confirmation through its official secure channel. Do not create another bid merely to clear a status mismatch.
- Money still blocked or unexpectedly debited: ask your bank to investigate using the UMN and transaction evidence; ask the issue registrar about allocation. Retain the complaint reference and use the issue's published grievance route if unresolved.
Questions and answers
What is a UPI mandate in an IPO?
It authorises the application amount to be blocked in your bank account and the allotted-share payment to be debited later. It is neither immediate payment to the broker nor a promise of shares.
Why have I not received my IPO mandate?
Check pending mandates in the correct app, the UPI ID entered in the bid, and bank/app eligibility. Contact the intermediary that placed the application to check the status and permitted resend; do not assume every missing request can be fixed by a fresh bid.
Why did mandate approval fail?
Insufficient available funds, an incorrect PIN or ID, unsupported setup, or a technical error can prevent approval. Use the displayed reason and official bank/app support, then ask the intermediary about permitted re-initiation before the applicable deadline.
Does the ₹5 lakh UPI limit mean I can apply as retail for ₹5 lakh?
No. Main-board retail bids are capped at ₹2 lakh. An individual's bid above ₹2 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh can use the IPO UPI mechanism in the non-institutional category, subject to the offer. SME category rules differ.
The UPI app says approved but the broker says pending. Is my application valid?
Do not infer final validity from one screen. Retain the UMN and bank block confirmation and ask the intermediary to reconcile its exchange and sponsor-bank records.
Can I cancel and apply again to fix a failed mandate?
Not as a blanket remedy. Category-specific cancellation and modification restrictions apply, particularly to non-retail and SME bids. Ask the intermediary to confirm the permitted correction; duplicate bids risk rejection.
When will my IPO money be unblocked?
Release follows the issue's allocation and bank process or applicable mandate expiry. Do not rely on a universal number of hours. If blocked money remains unavailable, contact the bank with the UMN and check allocation with the registrar.
Should I share my UPI PIN to obtain a refund or release?
No. Enter the PIN only inside your trusted app to authorise a verified request. Do not share it with anyone or approve unrelated collect requests to obtain a release.
